Update on Storm Damage and Recovery Efforts

Peter Whyte

Hi everyone,

Just a quick update after the storm damage last Thursday night (Storm Goretti) - In rough waters we have been able to make significant progress, quickly thanks to all Pirates (Cornish & Penzance & Newlyn) working together, in a crew that are all pulling together to get rugby back at the Mennaye, I must put on record a particular thanks to Anthony Whyte who has been crucial in expediting the process of making the site safe.

I must also say a big thank you for all the messages and offers of help from members and the community. It’s genuinely appreciated, we will surely need the whole community at some point soon and will keep you updated.
What’s been done so far

  • Damage checked, logged and photographed
  • Insurers and key people informed
  • Area made safe with barriers/signage
  • Debris cleared and site tidied up where safe

What’s happening now

A structural surveyor has provided a written survey and the stand is more badly damaged than it looked as the wind has damaged the frame and supporting pillars of the roof.

The good news is that insurers have now given us the green light to crack on. DSW are back on site this weekend (Saturday 17th & Sunday 18th) to start removing what’s unsafe — the roof, purlins and the concrete roof frame.

We’ll keep the area strictly out of bounds while this is happening, so please stick to the signage and barriers.

We’ll post another update as soon as we know more — including what this means for upcoming fixtures — and as we move towards replacing the stand.

Thanks again for the support,

Peter Whyte
Chairman, Penzance & Newlyn RFC
