Dear Penzance & Newlyn Members,
We are writing to share some unfortunate news following last night’s severe weather.
The covered stand was impacted by the storm overnight, resulting in damage that has left the stand unsafe and unfit for use. Club representatives attended the site early this morning to inspect the stand and the Mennaye pitch more generally, and unfortunately the extent of the damage means that the facility cannot be used safely at present.
As a result, tomorrow’s match against Wellington will be postponed, as we are unable to play on the Mennaye pitch in its current condition. This has been a difficult decision, but safety must come first. We will work with all parties to reschedule the fixture at the earliest convenient opportunity and will update members as soon as this is confirmed.
We Advise Everyone to stay of the site until further notice
In terms of next steps:
Specialist asbestos removal contractors will be on site this afternoon to assess the damage and provide a quotation for the clean-up. While the asbestos involved is low-grade, it must still be handled with appropriate care.
These contractors are attending with the assistance of the Cornish Pirates, who have been extremely supportive and proactive in helping us take immediate steps following the storm.
We have also notified our insurers of the damage and the potential clean-up and remediation requirements.
While it is still very early, we are hoping to arrange site clearance and securing works next week, subject to approvals and contractor availability. This is expected to include the removal of all asbestos from the stand, which—while arising from an unfortunate incident—will be a long-term benefit once completed.
We should also make members aware that both we and the Cornish Pirates have been contacted by media outlets, including the BBC and BBC Radio Cornwall, so you may see coverage of this incident in the coming days.
Please be assured that we are doing everything possible to get the stand, changing rooms, and wider facilities back up and operational as quickly and safely as possible, so that we can resume the season with minimal disruption.
We apologise sincerely for the inconvenience this situation may cause and thank you, as always, for your patience and support. Further updates will be shared as soon as we have confirmed information.
Kind regards,
Peter Whyte
