Dinner & Awards Evening

Phil Westren

Following the end of what has rightly been deemed a commendable season, the Pirates of Penzance & Newlyn RFC gathered at the Mennaye Field on Saturday for their well-attended Dinner & Awards Evening.

MC for the evening, Phil Westren, initially welcomed ‘One & All’ present, before a 3-course meal was soon enjoyed in the marquee and the important presentation of awards then took place.

Rhodri McAtee was invited to present the first three awards, all relating to the 2nd team. Recipients were Piran Finley – Most Improved Player;

Harvey Stone - Player of the Year;

Jonny Badcock – Players’ Player of the Year.

In order, other trophy recipients on the night were Andrew Snell - John Stirling Memorial Cup for Commitment (presented by Wendy Stirling)

; Ben Wragg - The Roger Pascoe Cup to the Supporters’ Player of the season (presented by Kelda Snell)

; Ben Martin - Clubman of the Year (presented by Peter Whyte, Chairman of Penzance & Newlyn RFC)

; Rob Trezise - The Dave Berryman Cup for Volunteer of the Year (presented by Peter Whyte);

Oscar Marr - The Monckton Cup for Achievement (presented by Peter Whyte)

; Des O’Connell – Darren Hicks Trophy (presented by Peter Whyte);

Ryan Forrester – Graham ‘Granite’ Waters Trophy for Endeavour (presented by Simon Nicholas);

The President’s Cup (presented by Phil Westren); Ben Wragg - 1st Team Top Try Scorer, with 16 to his name (presented by Head coach Murray Westren and coach John Stevens - Murray also spoke with reference to the season)

; Callum Walsh – Young Player of the Year (presented by Murray & John); Oscar Marr – Sportsman of the Year (presented by Murray & John);

Harvey Stone - Most Improved Player (presented by Murray & John); Joe Best - Player of the Year (presented by Murray & John);

Joe Best – Players’ Player of the Year (Presented by team captain Stan Somers).

Before concluding the successfully enjoyable evening with musical entertainment, it was hoped everyone would enjoy the close season break, ahead of the challenges that 2026/27 will inevitably bring.

For awareness, for their first campaign playing at a higher level in Regional 2 Tribute Ale South West (level 6), the Pirates 1st team had ended up the past season in eighth place. As for the 2nd team, they were both Counties 3 Cornwall league (level 9) and cup winners.
